yinyasa with Hildi
The pure Yin Yoga practice is slow, quiet and meditative, designed to assist us in feeling our bodies and feeling our yoga.
Yin yoga is based on the Taoist concept of yin and yang, opposite and complementary principles in nature. Yin is the stable, unmoving hidden aspect of things while yang is the changing, moving, revealing aspect. A Yin yoga class usually consists of a series of long held, passive floor poses that mainly work the lower part of the body: The hips, inner thighs, lower spine, areas that are especially rich in connective tissues.
When practicing Yin Yoga it is helpful to know that the intention and energy differs from familiar yang yoga style practice, however I do like to mix things up and most of the morning flow classes will incorporate elements of a flowing Yang (Vinyasa class) to warm up our body before we settle down into the Yin poses.
These classes are scientifically known to
-Calm and balance the mind and body
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Improve flexibility
- Improve joint mobility
- Balance the internal organs and improve the flow of chi/prana through meridian stimulation.
Restorative Yoga is something I really, really am passionate about, mainly because having witnessed and experienced first hand myself the great healing effects this type of yoga has.
The pace of our modern life has led to many problems with our health and at the root of most of these problems is stress. Restorative Yoga focuses on undoing that stress.
Since Restorative Yoga poses are held much longer than more active yoga poses they have the time to penetrate your body's system., -including your mind, to create significant shifts in both physical and mental health. Normally in Restorative classes we hold the poses between 7 - 15 minutes and you work at a maximum of 60%. The main goal of Restorative Yoga is to relax your nervous system as a secondary effect it provides a gentle opening of your joints and the practice is healing on multiple body-mind-spirit levels. At the heart of Restorative Yoga is the balance of energies that flow throughout your body and as we all know when the body is in balance a state of health is achieved. This is THE practice for Stress relief, injury rehabilitation, insomnia, recovery from athletic endeavours, work life, pregnancy, parenting and aging! Known to help prevent heart disease and diabetes. The psychological benefits of Restorative Yoga are well documented: the practice establishes mindfulness that leads to better life choices and consequently a happier state of being.
